Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure designed to save a severely damaged or infected tooth by removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the interior of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection. This procedure is often performed when the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or other dental issues.
Procedure:
Diagnosis: The process begins with a thorough examination, which may include dental X-rays, to determine the extent of the damage or infection. Symptoms such as severe toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, swelling, or pus discharge may indicate the need for a root canal.
Local Anesthesia: To ensure your comfort during the procedure, the dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding area.
Access Opening: A small opening is created in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
Pulp Removal: The infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and root canals using specialized instruments. The canals are cleaned and shaped to remove any remaining debris.
Disinfection: The cleaned canals are then disinfected to eliminate bacteria and prevent further infection.
Filling: The empty pulp chamber and canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This material seals the space and prevents recontamination.
Sealing: After the canals are filled, the access opening is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. In some cases, a dental crown may be recommended to protect and strengthen the treated tooth.
Restoration: If a dental crown is needed, a separate appointment will be scheduled to create and place the crown. The crown restores the tooth's functionality, strength, and appearance.
It's important to note that modern advancements in dental technology and techniques have made root canal treatment more comfortable and effective than in the past. If you experience severe tooth pain or other symptoms of infection, seeking prompt dental care can often prevent the need for tooth extraction and promote successful tooth preservation through root canal treatment.
